Looking for underground poker players in NYC
Finishing up my time in journalism school and am looking to do a story on the "underground poker scene." Would any of you all be comfortable setting up a time to chat or answering a few basic questions? Trying to crowd source as much as possible prior to finding my sources.
I grind and promote the Underground NYC Poker scene for a living. AMA.
Its not quite as you picture, not exactly what "Rounders" portrays, but yet somewhat similar. I generally grind the local manhattan 2/5 games and promote for them as well. If you ever had any questions about how they operate, legality, players, security, promotion, basically anything, feel free to ask. note- Ill try my hardest to be as vague as possible, yet as detailed as possible without releasing any private info on any game or party.
IAmA former underground poker dealer in NYC. Remember: if I ask if you're a cop you have to tell me or it's entrapment. Ask Me Anything!
Hi! I'm Billy, a stand-up comedian in New York City. I saw an AMA request for a professional dealer in a casino. I haven't dealt at a casino, but I was an underground poker dealer in NYC for four years! I've also done a lot of interesting things for money from the ages of 18-23. Ask Me Anything! Odd Jobs:
Underground Poker Dealer
Dealt blackjack in my mom's basement
"Adult Video Chat Host" (webcamming)
Textbook buybacks
Fake IDs
Ran an online poker "club"
Currently host a sex podcast that's listener-supported
One time I delivered pizza to Chris Rock
I'll be around all work day checking in. Edit: Thanks to those who were curious who chimed in! I'm on Reddit all the time so feel free to ask away if you find this thread. I'll still answer.
How will NYC's casino referendum affect the underground NYC poker scene?
I'm a freelancer writing an article about illegal/underground poker in NYC and how it will be impacted by the november referendum that approved casino construction in the state. I have played at a few underground games, but was looking for someone who could open up and talk to me about their experiences and how they see poker changing in the city (if at all). Online poker is also going to start coming back state by state (Nevada is the only state right now), which will create another legal alternative to the underground poker scene. Anyway, I'd appreciate any discussion and respect your privacy regarding the games. Cheers, Travis

$1/2. Every time I counted out chips to bet, no matter what street, I could see in my peripheral the player to my immediate left start the motion of mucking his cards and 99% ended up doing so. Every time. He and I got into a bigger pot heads up later in the night - river comes and I’m bluffing oop at this point so I start to count out chips really just to see what he does. And he repeats his same ‘I no longer like these f*kng cards’ action so I raise half pot and he folded like clockwork. How are some ppl so wildly unaware of their live giveaways? Here’s another angle I did the other night. Not my finest moment but it was kind of instinct since I saw a guy at my table do it a few hands prior (but not on purpose). He was all in facing 2 calls so he started to reach into his pocket for more money as the community cards came, basically accepting defeat. At least to me, it seemed like (and eventually ended up being) he had the losing hand. So fast forward to me and another aggressive guy and I runner runner the 5/6 boat. He bets river and I raise all in, and right then it clicked to reach into my pocket as he was contemplating calling, and pretend to reload. As soon as he saw that, he snap calls and sees the bad news and mucks. That was an $850 pot in an nyc underground $1/2 game that has a $10 mandatory “rock” so all gloves off lol. Poker fun ;)
If You Smellllllll What Vince Is Cooking ($WWE Calls)
Sports are cancelled and it’s fucking brutal. ESports betting is exploding in popularity and people are even gambling on (and watching) Madden simulations. I thought I had seen peak degeneracy playing in underground NYC poker rooms and reading what you dirtbags post on this sub but betting on computer sport simulations takes the cake (then again, it's not that much more fake than this market). No one knows when live sports will come back now that Disney put their mouse cock on the table and forced Dana White to cancel UFC 249. And despite what Daddy Trump may tell you in his thus far incredibly successful attempts at feeding his leftover viagra to the stock market, it's looking like the only sweaty grunting dudes you're going to be seeing for the time being are in your bedroom. Through the fog of godawful Big Bang Theory reruns and exciting free Pornhub premium, a hero emerges. As u/killlthenoise posted earlier, another fine demonstration of how this country functions took place Monday the WWE was granted essential business status in the state of Florida while, rather coincidentally, Linda McMahon spearheads one of the largest Trump super-PACs out there. I’m not here to bitch about the transparent shadiness here (tons of subreddits out there for that), I’m just trying to make some money so my cat isn’t seized by ETrade during a margin call. The WWE isn’t sports per se but it will scratch an itch that many people have as long as that itch isn't related to chlamydia. Fans, even the casual ones, will watch because barely anyone's releasing new content even tangentially related to live sports unless you're a fan of Nicuraguan soccer or Russian ping pong (these are legit the last two live sports my book has listed). Degens will watch because while mine doesn't, some sportsbooks are starting to take bets on WWE matches, especially since spoilers will be tough to come by with just a skeleton crew working these events. People are starved for some kind of live-ish entertainment and with no competition, it’s a once in a lifetime opportunity for them to attract some new eyeballs. The WWE Network hasn't been the runaway success they expected when they launched it a few years ago but they're making 265 million dollars a year from NBC for airing Raw, 205 million per year from Fox for Smackdown and, incredibly, 50 million per year from Saudi Arabia for hosting a few shows there. Revenues are pretty much locked in besides gate which isn't a major part of their business model, competition is as low as it'll ever be and costs are plummeting. From today: "The Company's reductions of employee compensation and headcount result in an estimated monthly savings of $4 million along with cash flow improvement of $140 million primarily from the deferral in spending on the Company's new headquarters." Let's touch on a few possible downsides. The XFL folded last week which is a shame because they were actually making some good strides this year and made gambling on games easier than ever (RIP NY Renegades, we hardly knew ya). The XFL is run by a separate company than WWE so it shouldn't affect the company. The overlap is just the founder and apparently Vinny Mac was prepared to take a 375 million dollar loss in the first three years of the league. Losses will still be painful for year one, possibly even worse than the ones you're experiencing on your John Holmes-esque portfolio of SPY puts, but not as bad as they would have been had the league been planning for year two right now, and that's not even considering the possibility they had insurance to the tits like Wimbledon did (they basically bought puts on themselves; wish there was a way for me to do that). Vinny offloading 15% of his stock a month ago initially concerned me but on closer inspection he did the same in 2018 when they were opening the XFL to free up some cash for his other venture; odds are he was doing the same here after they closed up shop. I have heard the possibility raised that they filed for bankruptcy so they could get some of that sweet freshly printed government money. Also doesn't hurt that Vince got a sweetheart deal to sell his stock, because of course he did, but he kinda still owns it now. While most stocks have rebounded huge during this latest face-ripping rally, WWE stock is still trading around 1/3 of it's price a year ago when it was $99.25, and much of that drop was due to a January shakeup that saw them replace some of their top execs. I could go into technicals on the company and the stock but I know most of you are just skipping down to the bottom for a strike anyways so fuck it, let's make some cash...just make sure you declare it all so Irwyn R. Schyster doesn't come looking for you. TL;DR - WWE 5/15 40c And to our heroes at the SEC, if you're reading this - I have no idea what the hell I'm doing.

In an effort to figure out the lemon bowl mystery in National Treasure I went full Benjamin Gates to solve the riddle.
In honor of the 13th anniversary of National Treasure, I decided to clear up (with educated guesswork) the infamous lemon mystery. Why is a scene involving lemons infamous? Having lemons in a refrigerator is nothing groundbreaking or worthy of internet snark. It is the way the lemons are presented that has confounded audiences for well over a decade. The issue the nitpickers have revolves around the lemons resting nicely in a big bowl in the middle of Jon Voight’s refrigerator. It is a one-second scene in a two-hour movie that has joined the ranks of world-famous mysteries like Bigfoot, The Loch Ness Monster, and magnets. Watch the clip to get a feel for the scene In my quest to be more like Benjamin Gates I’ve watched the scene over and over and did some lemon research to best guess why he had those lemons in a bowl in the middle of his refrigerator. Here is how the scene plays out. Nic Cage and crew steal the Declaration of Independence in Washington D.C. and make their getaway to Philadelphia to hideout in Jon Voight’s house. They realize they need lemons for the declaration and the scene starts to take place. Here are the clues I’m working with:
They start their drive from Washington D.C to Philadelphia well after sunset (7:30PM) around 9:00PM.
Mr. Voight has a sizable bar that looks to be loaded with cognac, gin and Irish whiskey. Also, to the left of the bar there is a decanter filled with a mystery booze.
If you look to the left of the characters during the clip you will see several glasses filled with iced tea and lemon.
When Harvey Keitel is at the house later on you will notice there is a half-filled iced-tea pitcher.
There is a bowl of apples and bananas in the same place where the iced tea glasses are
There is a massive library inside the house
Next to the apples and iced tea glasses there are poker chips.
Here are the Benjamin Gates style deductions:
They arrived in Philadelphia around 12:30AM which means a late night lemon pickup was pretty impractical. Also, the van they were driving in was being searched for so they would want to keep it off the road. This means the lemons had to be in the house.
Before they say “we need more lemons” they already have a cut up lemon in a tiny bowl. This means that they must’ve found the lemons in the refrigerator, taken them out of the bag and placed them in a bowl in the middle of the refrigerator. Nothing in his refrigerator looks organized, so I highly doubt that Voight would organize them in a bowl.
After looking at various retailer websites it seems that there are approximately ten lemons in a two pound bag that is commonly sold. Due to the contents of his fridge it seems clear that he would rather grab a bag of lemons then pick them individually.
Due the contents of the refrigerator and the large pizza box I’m guessing that Voight rarely cooks. Thus, I don’t see him making lemon chicken or anything of the sort. Also, you won’t see him making any lemon cheesecake bars.
There were no lemons in Harvey’s iced tea. Thus, they were all used or Jon Voight straight up dissed Harvey.
The inclusion of poker chips means that Voight most likely has a weekly game with several of his friends. The lemons could easily be used with iced tea and various drinks.
Lemon hot take: After several discussions about the lemons I’ve learned there is a small group of people who believe Voight placed the lemons in the bowl himself. The reasoning is he decided to wash all the lemons at once instead of cleaning one at a time. After the cleaning he placed them in the bowl. This would make it easier for him to access. I think these people are delusional. Why were the lemons in the refrigerator?
The loaded bar and empty contents of a wine bottle suggest that Jon Voight likes the occasional drink. I didn’t see any mixers in his bar or house so it looks as if he likes his booze neat or on the rocks. Lemon may seem like an odd garnish but it combines nicely with a whiskey hot toddy or gin/vodka tonics.
During the inspection of the declaration I’m deducing that Voight set them up with a nice pitcher of caffeinated iced tea. It was already late so they needed something cool and refreshing to keep them up. The fact that there are lemons inside the drinks show he is used to entertaining people (Poker) at his house and has no problem using lemons in their drinks/cocktails.
He has a massive library and since he is eating dinner at 12:00AM I’m assuming he likes to stay up late and read. Since he loves making iced tea, he most likely enjoys brewing tea. Perhaps he likes to make lemon tea (needs half a lemon for squeezing) or cuts up a piece of lemon for his tea. The lemon has a nice detoxification element and helps with immune system building and digestion.
After researching lemon drinks in Philadelphia I found a treasure trove of articles talking about drinks and lemons. People love their iced tea, lemon shandys, and lemonade. Also, I managed an annual event in Philly and many of my volunteers could be seen with half gallon iced tea jugs from WaWa (they were obsessed). Thus, the dude loved his city and embraced drinks that could benefit from a lemon.

Had an incredible final session in a mini-adventure and thought I'd post about some lessons I learned as a new DM
Context: I rocked up to NYC in October last year, didn't know anyone and had always wanted to get into D&D so I decided to learn how to DM. I ended up playing a LOT (running 2 simultaneous campaigns and a bunch of one shots in between) trying to learn the ropes while also writing my own homebrew world week by week. The group I had a final session with last night were all veteran players and amazing RPers and while the adventure only ended up being six sessions long, it felt huge and everyone got really involved in the story. Here's some personal lessons I learned:
Don't get attached to your NPCs. Ever. I've done various WoD rpg campaigns as a player for the last 4 years and played some incredibly morally corrupt characters (and also some good ones). My general attitude as a PC was always, "lolololol morals are for losers." But then I wrote my own NPCs... and some of them died.... and some of them were ignored and my internal monologue was forever screaming DON'T YOU PEOPLE HAVE ANY MORALS???? [I'd like to take this opportunity to personally apologise to my GM of 4 years and to all his NPCs I murdered.]
The ability of your players to RP their characters well can really carry the story and take it to heights you never expected. They can even come to conclusions about the motivations of NPCs that are far more nuanced and interesting than you had planned for and which you can steal and then pretend that's what was going on the whole time!
You can attempt to predict player actions and the best way to do this is by throwing out interesting plot hooks... however, it is entirely up to them whether they take the bait or not. Don't be disappointed when it doesn't work out. Try not to butt in (this is one of the hardest parts of being a DM) unless absolutely critical and try and make it natural when you do. E.g. make a PC roll an intelligence check and attempt to show the links between the information as naturally as possible.
Work on your poker face. Mine is rubbish. I laugh waaaaay too much when PCs say stupid shit in serious situations and it is a struggle to try and keep a straight face when they reach the dumbest possible conclusion off the info you have given them.
Mourn and move on. Abandoned quests, NPCs, and pre-written stuff is all fair game in D&D. It's almost a double standard. You have to come prepared with lore and information about the world and NPCs and quest hooks and everything else, but also can't spend hours and hours on this shit when it might never come up or your players decide they don't care and go hat shopping instead lmao. I fortunately had a player who was SUPER interested in my homebrew lore (it helped that it was creepy ancient power circles and a book about a city that was almost wiped from history) so I wrote quite a bit more than I intended and it was super fun to watch his reaction to the slow reveal of something far grander than what they had prepared for in this backwater city.
PLAYER CAUTION COMES AT THE WORST OF TIMES. Gave the PCs a magic chest with a (not too hard to solve) puzzle lock that they found at the bottom of a river cave after defeating a banshee. They didn't open it for THREE (3) sessions. I was basically begging them to find this cool shit I'd put inside by the end. Payoff was great when they did though. Had an archaeological diary that ended abruptly after the author allegedly found what she was looking for and a cursed dagger which led to some real fun encounters in the final session.
D R E A M S E Q U E N C E S. Everyone loves a good dream sequence. Especially when they involve massive black stone summoning circles on corpse islands and conversations with the owner of a cursed dagger.
And finally: be adaptable, don't railroad, and maintain an air of control even if you have no idea what is happening. Collaborative storytelling is what D&D is all about. You're just a vessel through which the story flows and you have to adapt to the shape it takes based off your player's actions. It's hard making stuff up on the fly, especially names, but if you at least pretend you know what you're doing, your PCs are going to think you know what you're doing. They're pretty forgiving and apparently willing to drop over 100GP at a shop in town buying fancy hats.
I'm super sad to leave this group behind. The final ten minutes of the session included a conversation and brief alliance with a curious green dragon, the sacrifice of a PC's manservant (RIP Steve, you didn't deserve this) with the cursed dagger to open an ancient portal, and the players finding themselves (and the dragon) in the dark, on an island of long-dead corpses, surrounded by an underground ocean. It was amazing. We also may have converted the table next to us, who were playing a board game at the time, to D&D. As I described the final scenes to my players I looked up to see the whole other table all turned around and deathly quiet as I was describing what was happening. They asked what game we were playing afterwards haha. Would love to hear everyone else's advice and stories of first time campaigns! Where you thought it was going to go, versus where it actually went!
Saw a commercial for the show Black Market on Viceland, I think it will be on this Tuesday. This weeks episode is about people who rob underground poker games in NYC. Thought it might be interesting to some here.
What exciting and weird activities would you do in NYC with five days on your own?
Hi everyone! First time reddit post. Hope I'm doing it right. So I've found myself on my own in NYC through Sunday. Now, I've lived here for fifteen years, so yeah, not that exciting, but this is the first time in many years that I'll have that time to myself. I've intentionally not made plans (OK, I'm hanging with a buddy of mine Thursday night, but that's it). I used to have a great time wandering around the city by myself, and I plan on doing that. But I'd like it to be more focused this weekend; rather than the "see what happens" model, I'd like to have some destinations in mind. All I've come up with is an underground poker game one night. What do you all recommend? I'd like stuff off the beaten path - I've hit all the museums and tourist attractions I need. I walk everywhere, and plan on spending most of my days in Manhattan, Queens or Brooklyn. Anything you all like doing - the more novel and weirder the better, but any unique bars or hangouts that you really dig on your own are welcome too. Thanks in advance!
