Truth and Lies
Well, tonight was sneertastic tv!! The lips were curled and the secrets and lies were unfurled on the battlefields of love.
Brittany and the Poker Chip - After pushing open the motel door and finding an empty room, they head out on a 5 hour tour of Las Vegas’ lowlights. Was it just me or did Marcelino look increasingly panicky? Brittany just wanted him to shut the fuck up. Cindy was rescued at the last minute when the hounds of crack were howling at their backs.
Holy Andrea and Laidback Lamar - In yet another dramatic soap opera moment, Andrea screams for everyone to pack their bags. In a MAN’S move, Tennison refuses to go to a hotel and sign off on the childish behavior. He puts Nyla in charge of Holy A and he takes charge of Lamar. Tennison IS basically Priscilla’s dad and he explains how he and Nyla are raising her. I want Tennison to be my father. This guy....someone in politics snap him up. You NEED him. Meanwhile, Nyla, forever pragmatic and wise points out to Andrea that she is immature while ALSO counseling Lamar by text!!!! Even Priscilla is telling them to tone down the rhetoric. And an 8 year old shall lead them.
From the Sacred to the Profane
Lindsey Lowdown and Scott “The Lip” Lauer - The Battle of Olive Branch continued to rage. Papers floated, powder flew, pliers carved profanities in desks instead of chests, and the sneers were lip curlingly deep. The Lip was in a completely defensive posture there in the back 48. With cigarettes drawn at 20 paces, war was officially declared by Lindsey - lo the lowering clouds behind her talking head. The winds of war are sending a hellscape The Lip’s way.
Fivehead and CPK - And the gaslight continues to be ignited by Fivehead. The argument was of little interest beyond Fivehead declaring his candidacy for father of the year (after missing court due to a drunken one night stand) yet again all proof to the contrary.
Chon, Amish Chane and Laceup - Pot stirring and stirring and stirring...Chon stalking Laceup to a restaurant, Laceup’s dad stirring up Chane who was lied to by Laceup...the lying never ends. It’s like a dog chasing its own tail.
Crazy Eyes and the Stunned Mullet - Crazy descended from crazy. I am completely unsurprised by Destinie’s background. And as she and her mom swilled from a bottle of Jaegermeister, rehashing life, the universe and everything, I think we can all see why Crazy lives for the moment only. The desperation of Shawn sitting in the glow of his phone trying to protect his 50k egg was...pathetic. As each question that he should have asked years ago flashed through his stunted brain, we watched as the fiery ember that was their love, was washed away in a jaeger shot.
Until next week.....

Retail stores use casino tricks to keep you inside longer!
[PSYCH BUT FASHION] Hi everyone, I'm back with some more shopping research:) In this post, I draw parallels between casinos and retail stores - they both use similar tricks to keep you inside for as long as possible. Enjoy the read!
1. THE GRAND PRINCIPLE OF 'PLAYGROUND' CASINOS
Have you ever wondered why casinos are so spacious and grand? New ones built in the early 2000s are constructed according to the 'playground' (luxurious resort-like) principle. It aims to create a festive holiday feeling with entertainment, installations, art, high ceilings etc. This makes you enjoy the experience even beyond playing games so you don't want to leave - it increases the chance that you will eventually place a bet somewhere (Finlay, Marmurek, Kanetkar & Londerville, 2010).
Modern shopping malls use a similar idea to keep you inside - think Harrods, Dubai Mall, Mall of Emirates. Airy, spacious, full of art, installations, and entertainment. It makes you reluctant to leave. More time spent inside = more chance of buying.
2. LAYOUT
You will notice that in casinos, roulette tables and slot machines take up the prime space in the building - they're always the most visible because those are the most profitable games for the casino. You will find poker rooms hidden in the farthest corner of the building because poker is played against other players and not against the house. Apart from small fees, casinos do not make much money out of it because the money is circulating among the players.
In the retail world, poker rooms are sales sections. They will make you go through multiple new collections in order to reach sale - just in case a more expensive item catches your eye and you decide to buy it.
3. LACK OF TIME CUES
Casinos do everything so you lose the track of time, keep having fun and gambling. There are no clocks or windows, the doors are tinted, and the atmosphere is exactly the same regardless of what time of the day it is (Sykes, Gaffney, Sykes & Posner, 2012).
There's also quiet and ambient music - it gets overwhelmed by slot machine sounds and chips clinking together. The music is kept quiet and transitions seamlessly - the reason being that separate songs can provide time cues, which might make you realise how long you've spent inside. Casinos keep the music for atmospheric purposes but make sure you don't focus on it (Noseworthy & Finlay, 2009).
Windows are common in malls to add to the 'grand' feeling; moreover, malls are usually open during the day only anyway so they have less incentive to keep the light out. You will rarely see a clock in a mall though, and separate stores are often windowless to eliminate time cues. Stores also use quiet, ambient, seamlessly transitioning music. Research shows that loud music drives people out of the store so they spend less time inside and buy less often (fun fact: small stores play loud music inside to avoid overcrowding) (Michel, Baumann & Gayer, 2017).
4. SCENT
Casinos often have a signature scent. Fresh, pleasant smell adds to the atmosphere and leaves you wanting to spend more time inside. A study showed that people gambled on slots significantly more when the area was scented compared to when it was unscented (Hirsch, 1992).
Stores use it too - research says that ambient smell increases customer satisfaction, buying, and willingness to return (Gulas & Bloch, 1995).
5. ALCOHOL
Casinos often offer free alcohol. It adds to the feeling of hospitality but the main reason is that alcohol reduces inhibition which leads to riskier gambling (Baron & Dickerson, 1999).
[personal interpretation alert]
Luxury boutiques often offer you free champagne; however, it is less common in the retail industry. It also feels more oriented towards hospitality and luxurious experience rather than control inhibition because the context of a retail store is not particularly congruent with alcohol consumption. Regardless, even small amounts of alcohol can reduce inhibition which potentially increases how much we buy so a glass of champagne could well be a strategic trick. What do you think?

September 8th, 2020 - /r/1through10: Gambling with upvotes!
656 risking it for
1 year! When you hear the word "gambling", you might first think about a lot of cash, huge piles of poker chips, slot machines, betting, Las Vegas, and large risks. Of course, a ton of websites and video games exist that offer you a money-free gambling game with in-game currency. Or, you could visit 1through10.
1through10 is a subreddit for guessing the correct number between 1 and 10. You simply post your guess in the title, and the moderator will soon tell you were your guess correct or not with a random number generator. Did you lose? You'll get a one day ban from the subreddit and your post will most likely be downvoted by the community. Did you win? You'll get your post most likely upvoted by the community and you can try your luck and guess one more time!
1through10 is simple and safe. The gambling method is easy to understand and run, and the only currency you are going around is your Reddit karma. The subreddit also hosts special events occasionally, such as a larger range of guess-able numbers, and special prizes, including unique user flairs or Reddit Awards. Hop in, good luck!

Plans for the future?
SimCasino is in early access. I was curious if the devs have any kind of a road map for features they plan to add in to the game.
But in the meantime, here are some ideas I'd love to see implemented one way or another...
- Poker Room. This should be a zone-able room. I could potentially make the same case for blackjack and other table games, for the sake of being able to set the same rules for a whole room full of similar games without setting the rules for the entire casino, but I think poker especially should have a room. A poker room would allow a poker desk where the poker room manager handles making/breaking tables. Instead of the player deciding how many tables are Hold'em or Omaha or whatever other game, the player can select what games are allowed at the poker desk and let the poker floor manager run the making & breaking of games (this is how it works in real life). Additionally, a poker room would allow the tables in a specific area to be connected to each other in order to allow for poker tournaments. Poker tournaments are generally less profitable for casinos than normal cash games, but they can help the poker room fill up empty tables at otherwise less busy times.
- Spas, shopping malls, restaurants, golfing, sports arena (boxing, mma, etc), convention center. Lots of casinos, especially in Las Vegas, aren't casinos so much full featured resorts that happen to also have a casino attached.
- Megaprizes. Think National Lampoons Vegas Vacation where Russ ("Papa Giorgio") keeps winning the cars. It'd be great to be able to pop in a car attached to a slot machine that serves as both a gambling interaction point for guests, but also decor and entertainment. It'd basically be a jackpot-only slot machine. It could be a car. It could be a giant oversized slot machine with a huge jackpot.
- Standalone restaurants. Unless I'm missing something, the only dining option currently is a buffet. It's probably the best option if you only have the one option, but one of my favorite parts about visiting Las Vegas is actually the food. All of the casinos are full of restaurants under the name of celebrity chefs. Looking at just Caesar's Palace in Las Vegas, there are 2 Gordon Ramsay restaurants, 1 Bobby Flay, 1 Guy Savoy, and a few others by less famous yet still celebrity chefs. And that's just Caesar's Palace alone.
- VIPs. Whether famous professional poker players or just general celebrities, it'd be neat to have the opportunity to attract them as a visitor which in turn could drive more normal guests to your casino. To a degree, this could even have your casino develop a reputation (think modern Rat Pack?).
- Events. Ocean's 11 style heists. Super Bowl weekend overflowing your SportsBook. Major poker tournaments (special higher limits versions of the poker tournaments mentioned above, think like WSOP, WPT, etc). Major conventions in town spiking demand for business guests. Downturn in economy just overall reducing demand across the board. These would all be events outside of the player's control. But there should also be promotional events the player's can run to encourage certain kinds of behaviors. This would include aforementioned poker tournaments.. but weirdly, casinos also have slot machine tournaments. Casinos also can do things like give away "free" chips when you check in to a hotel room or for signing up with the player's club (I say free because usually they're special chips that can't actually be cashed out, but can be used at the table games [other than poker] as if they were real).
- A more fully fledged tech tree. I'd kind of like to immediately build blackjack tables without any research. But also other table games would have to be researched. Also, additional rules for blackjack (that ultimately improve the profitability of the table) should be researched. Meanwhile, with slot machines, we should start with slot machines that aren't even in the game yet (the ones with the 3 spinners, 3 lines and you need to make a line or diagonal, with cherry, bar, etc.). These get researched into 5 spinners, 5 lines and then you can go to the computer poker machines (which are in the game) and more modern fully digital slot machines and stuff. With slot machines, after the ones with the physical spinners, the research would be more along the lines of unlocking the different themes for them.
- Roaming staff. I don't know, maybe I'm not there in the game yet... but generally in a casino, you have servers walking around trying to bring alcohol to patrons (and in the poker rooms and sports books, this can even include full food deliveries from the restaurants). In Las Vegas, this is free in every casino I've ever been in. Outside of Vegas, you typically still have to pay for the alcohol, but nonetheless someone is bringing it to you... because the casino wants you sat in front of that slot machine continuing to feed it.

MAME 0.223
MAME 0.223 has finally arrived, and what a release it is – there’s definitely something for everyone! Starting with some of the more esoteric additions, Linus Åkesson’s AVR-based
hardware chiptune project and
Power Ninja Action Challenge demos are now supported. These demos use minimal hardware to generate sound and/or video, relying on precise CPU timings to work. With this release, every hand-held LCD game from Nintendo’s Game & Watch and related lines is supported in MAME, with Donkey Kong Hockey bringing up the rear. Also of note is the Bassmate Computer fishing aid, made by Nintendo and marketed by Telko and other companies, which is clearly based on the dual-screen Game & Watch design. The steady stream of TV games hasn’t stopped, with a number of French releases from Conny/VideoJet among this month’s batch.
For the first time ever, games running on the Barcrest MPU4 video system are emulated well enough to be playable. Titles that are now working include several games based on the popular British TV game show The Crystal Maze, Adders and Ladders, The Mating Game, and Prize Tetris. In a clear win for MAME’s modular architecture, the breakthrough came through the discovery of a significant flaw in our Motorola MC6840 Programmable Timer Module emulation that was causing issues for the Fairlight CMI IIx synthesiser. In the same manner, the Busicom 141-PF desk calculator is now working, thanks to improvements made to Intel 4004 CPU emulation that came out of emulating the INTELLEC 4 development system and the prototype 4004-based controller board for Flicker pinball. The Busicom 141-PF is historically significant, being the first application of Intel’s first microprocessor.
Fans of classic vector arcade games are in for a treat this month. Former project coordinator Aaron Giles has contributed netlist-based sound emulation for thirteen Cinematronics vector games: Space War, Barrier, Star Hawk, Speed Freak, Star Castle, War of the Worlds, Sundance, Tail Gunner, Rip Off, Armor Attack, Warrior, Solar Quest and Boxing Bugs. This resolves long-standing issues with the previous simulation based on playing recorded samples. Colin Howell has also refined the sound emulation for Midway’s 280-ZZZAP and Gun Fight.
V.Smile joystick inputs are now working for all dumped cartridges, and with fixes for ROM bank selection the V.Smile Motion software is also usable. The accelerometer-based V.Smile Motion controller is not emulated, but the software can all be used with the standard V.Smile joystick controller. Another pair of systems with inputs that now work is the original Macintosh (128K/512K/512Ke) and Macintosh Plus. These systems’ keyboards are now fully emulated, including the separate numeric keypad available for the original Macintosh, the Macintosh Plus keyboard with integrated numeric keypad, and a few European ISO layout keyboards for the original Macintosh. There are still some emulation issues, but you can play Beyond Dark Castle with MAME’s Macintosh Plus emulation again.
In other home computer emulation news, MAME’s SAM Coupé driver now supports a number of peripherals that connect to the rear expansion port, a software list containing IRIX hard disk installations for SGI MIPS workstations has been added, and tape loading now works for the Specialist system (a DIY computer designed in the USSR).
Of course, there’s far more to enjoy, and you can read all about it in the
whatsnew.txt file, or get the source and 64-bit Windows binary packages from
the download page. (For brevity, promoted V.Smile software list entries and new Barcrest MPU4 clones made up from existing dumps have been omitted here.)

My uninteresting poker story. Is it time to give up on the dream or do I gather myself and make one last run at it?
This is going to be a long post. My life story almost. It all started in 2010 when I was introduced to poker. Yada yada yada, I got hooked.
Naturally a tight passive player, I was able to stretch each $20 deposit a long way.
I slowly started adding aggression. Betting with flush draws, etc.
Ran it up to around 3k.
Booked a flight to LA to go visit my cousin but it was really just an excuse to go to commerce casino (my first live experience).
Didn't know about their $40 buy in structure. Lost 3k in 1 week.
quit playing for a while.
black friday happens.
Dream is offically dead.
Oh wait, what are these off shore sites. Bodog? sportsbookpoker? intertops? cake? wtf. lets check them out.
Ran good on intertops. Turned $20 into 4.3k in 1 week by running like Usain.
Played against a guy named ivysaurus for my entire roll at 25/50 headsup.
Lost.
Called it quits again.
got a job at a restaurant.
worked there for 2 years.
saved up 10k.
moved to vegas in 2016.
played live 1/2.
played too loose.
Lost about 2k the first month.
Switched over to playing 1/3 at bellagio.
better results started happening.
wpt diamond is starting.
Cameras all over the place in bellagio.
poker tables all full.
The sportsbook is filled with tables now.
My roll is at 16k.
I try to get into a 1/3 game. Waitlist too deep.
2/5, same story.
Theres an open seat at a 5/10 game.
eh why not, im running good lately.
I sit down. Called down 2 streets 2nd pair.
My heart is racing. Villain checks river. I check back. I win.
$300 profit in 1 hand.
New villain sits down at table.
Hes a tv guy that plays 25/50 on poker night in america. I forget his name. Arabic or armenian lookin dude with curly hair.
He wild.
Hes splashing cuz hes just trying to pass the time until he gets into the bigger games.
I win 2k off him in like 30 minutes. He gives me the death look and mutters some curse words. Floor comes over, tells this man his seat is open. He gets up. Floorman picks up his chips for him cuz he a bitch.
Game seems to be too tough now. Actually its the same game, but Im sitting on a 4k stack. I get nervous and cash out.
my bankroll at like 19k now. Highest point of my life.
Fell in love with a hooker. Down 3k.
bankroll 16k.
Refocus.
Go to aria to play some 1/3.
Crush it.
Lots of noise at a plo table in the corner near the bathroom.
I get on the waitlist for that game.
Im addicted to plo now.
Ran good at first. Won like 5k my first week playing 1/3/5 plo.
Then my ev started leveling out. I was never a winner at plo.
Lost the 5k right back and then some.
dont worry, losing 5-7k in a week isnt that bad.
or is it?
damnit it was.
This was the moment I should have gone back to 1/3 nl.
but nope. Plo more fun.
kept playing. learning on the fly. didnt do that bad looking back on it, but it was still bad.
my bankroll was down to 14k at one point and I remember feeling so defeated.
I might as well have had $100 to my name, cuz thats what it felt like. I do not know why. Mental issues.
It was all down hill from here.
the chase begins...
fill in the blanks
you know how this story ends.

Iron Clays: Unboxing and Discussion
The
Iron Clays are a luxury "game counter" (poker chip) first released by Roxley Games as part of their 2017 Brass Birmingham campaign. Due to demand from fans they went on to create a follow up Kickstarter in June of 2019 for just the Iron Clays. The campaign was delayed for a few months by COVID-19 but I received my shipment of Iron Clays just yesterday and wanted to let you all
see them for yourself.
My pledge was for the standard distribution of 400 chips in a printed box; the kickstarter price was listed as 182 CAD and, including shipping, I paid a total of 168 USD at the time.
It was a bit of a rough start with a large hole and some dents in the shipping container. Fortunately the contents themselves were entirely undamaged.
The chips are contained in a nice box with foil lettering and magnets that keep the lid closed. Within the box are four plastic containers that hold the chips securely. The chips are beautifully produced and come in 8 denominations currently (1, 5, 10, 20, 50, 100, 500, 2000). I was opposed to the inclusion of 10s and 50s during the campaign, I still am, but in the end I think the 50 may be my favorite looking chip. They weigh an average of 9.4g (compared to 9.2g for a stack of 20 casino chips I own and 8.1g for the chips in Splendor); individual variation in weight from chip to chip is low with all measuring between 9-10g (using a low precision kitchen scale).
The chips themselves appear to be of excellent quality; out of 400 chips I have found only one
misprint. It should be noted that all of the chips have small lightly colored
spots on the edges where they were presumably attached to the mold and so I don't consider this to be a misprint. This doesn't particularly bother me and the edges are otherwise very smooth with a barely palpable seam. I have dropped a number of chips, as well as their plastic containers, from table height during my testing over the past day and have not managed to break or damage anything.
Having shown you the chips I did want to discuss some of the concerns raised by various backers and poker chip aficionados since the campaign was announced. A major concern voiced by poker chip collectors has been the chips "slipperiness". The concern being that the chips actual usability is impaired by this because of poor stackability. I have compared the Iron Clays to some chips I grabbed from casinos in
Las Vegas (I believe these are so-called Paulson chips which are generally accepted as top of the line and go for >$1 a chip) and find that they are indeed slipperier. This is demonstrated by a
tilt test where stacks of Iron Clays consistently fall at a lower angle than the Vegas chips. When they fall they also tend to slide
further on my table; on average sliding 55.5 cm compared to 35 cm for the Paulsons and 48 cm for the Splendor chips. I also
compared manipulation of both the Iron Clays and the Paulsons and noticed some of the differences in the way these chips handle. The Paulsons are slightly easier to pickup by tilting the stack but in truth 20 chips is too many for me to comfortably handle with either of the chip types. All this said; I'm not convinced that this will impact usability and if that changes in the future there is apparently significant improvement with lightly sanding the chip faces.
There has also been some criticism of the color choice and edge spot design. These concerns are valid because it is important to be able to quickly count stacks of chips to and this is aided by having distinct colors and edge spots. I have an
album showing all combinations of chips under the same lighting so you can decide for yourself if distinguishing chips of different denominations is difficult in mixed stacks. While the 50s, 20s and 5s are somewhat similar I don't find that I have difficulty distinguishing them.
I feel that the various other criticisms raised (color of specific denominations, labeled vs unlabeled, denominated vs undenominated) are entirely matters of opinion and am unconvinced that these design choices impact usability in any meaningful way. I backed the Iron Clays because I wanted to avoid the garish colors and immersion breaking casino theme of other poker chip lines so I think of these aspects of the chips as features rather than flaws.
In conclusion I am very satisfied by the Iron Clays. They are sharp looking and do not sacrifice functionality; when considering their price keep in mind that they come with a transportation/storage solution included. I don't want to reduce my impression to an x/10 rating but I do feel that these are a top notch product that fit the theme of a wide variety of board games.
Final Update: Out of curiosity I sanded a stack of chips too see if the slipperiness could be reduced. The white stack is sanded, blue is unsanded and the mixed stack is the Paulson's from prior. The chips were very lightly sanded and there is no perceptible difference in appearance but they now apear to be LESS slippery than the Paulson's!
